A virus of the herpes family; CMV infections may occur without any symptoms or may result in mild flu-like symptoms of aching, fever, mild sore throat, weakness, enlarged lymph nodes. While it is usually mild and self-limiting, more severe CMV infections can lead to hepatitis, mononucleosis, or pneumonia. CMV is “shed” in body fluids—urine, semen, saliva, feces, and sweat. While occuring even in non-immunosuppressed people (as well as 94 percent of gay men studied), in the presence of an immune deficiency, such as AIDS, it can cause disease in a variety of organs including the lungs, eyes, brain, and colon.
